New Under Sea Mega Sculpture-Park for DiversJason De Caires Taylor's Latest Diving Attraction off Mexican Coast
Jason De Caires Taylor, sculptor and diver, is planning his latest Installation. His sculpture park will help the local economy and take the strain off the natural reefs.
Jason De Caires Taylor is an artist who combines his love of sculpture with his love of the sea. A talented sculptor and a fully trained diving instructor, he is well known for his under water installations where the sculptures become both diving sites and opportunities for regeneration of the coral reefs, creating new habitats for sea life. By creating such underwater attractions for divers, he is also aiming to take the pressure off the natural sites, thereby allowing them to regenerate. Jason's De Caires Taylor's Latest WorkLa Evolución Silenciosa (The silent evolution) is a monumental underwater sculptural installation planned for The National Marine Park of Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc. Comprising over four hundred permanent life-size sculptures the work will become one of the largest and most ambitious underwater artificial attractions in the world. La Evolución Silenciosa aims to usher in a new age of responsibility and sustainable tourism. It is hoped that the installation will be a catalyst of social change, creating opportunities and defining the area as progressive. Working alongside creator Jason deCaires Taylor will be a team of artists, builders, marine biologists, engineers and scuba divers to complete the various parts of the installation. The Archive of Lost Dreams InstallationThe archive of lost dreams (El Archivero de los Sueños) depicts an underwater archive, maintained by a male registrar. The archive is a collection of messages in bottles brought together by the natural forces of the ocean. The registrar is collating the individual bottles and categorizing the contents according to the nature of each message - fear, hope, loss, or belonging. This, it is hoped, will record for posterity current values and aspirations that typify this era in time. The sculpture will be placed within an area of the national marine park which has been severely damaged by hurricanes and tropical storms. The intention is to draw the high numbers of visitors to the region and away from other sections of the reef system that have suffered from over exploitation. Message-in-a-Bottle OpportunityJason De Caires Taylor asked people to suggest messages that they would like to be placed in permanently sealed bottles to be incorporated into the sculpture. However, this opportunity timed-out on May 1st 2009.
